"HALLOWEEN" picture books

What's in the Witch's Kitchen?, by Nick Sharratt (2009, Walker Books)

A fun reading on Halloween, suitable for younger children. Repeated rhyming sentences create a fast-paced rhythm.

The flaps on each page hide other images and, depending on how they are turned, they reveal different content. This makes it extremely interactive and interesting.

The book contains various words related to the kitchen environment such as: fridge, bowl, tea pot, tin, cooking, brewing…

Why not take the opportunity to converse with young readers in English? We can use different adjectives to describe what is hidden under the flaps: delicious, tasty, bad, nasty and ask questions like: "Do you like_____?" answering "Yes, I do/No, I don't." and also "Would you eat____?", "No, I wouldn't/ Yes, I would.

The Foggy Foggy Forest , by Nick Sharratt (2008, Walker Books)

This forest is so foggy' that you can't see anything but shadows.

"What can this be in the foggy, foggy forest?" recites each page.

We can describe characters before or after revealing them. With older children we can create anticipation and interest by looking for clues to guess who the shadow belongs to: “I can see some wings…”/ “I can see a trumpet!

Both of these readings can be used with our Halloween themed game.
